Sir – In both codes of rugby any tackle surrounding the head is deemed dangerous and results in a penalty, and the offending player can be suspended. The same rules should apply to cricket. Sir – Arsene Wenger keeps ruing the fact that Arsenal cannot score goals but every amateur punter in the country knows that his team attack too slowly, they play without width into crowded penalty areas and they fail to shoot accurately from range. Why can’t he see that and do something about it? Get the team to go and watch Manchester City! Sir – The only way to prevent persistent short-pitched bowling is by having a line drawn, midway down the wicket, and penalising the bowler for bowling the ball whereupon it pitches his side of that line.

The penalty for the first transgression would be a no-ball. A second offence in the same over would be the forfeit of six runs. Any further occurrences by the same bowler should see him removed from the attack altogether.
