Wigan bring Howe’s men to heel in unbeaten run

- Making a difference: Wigan’s Dan Burn came on to score his side’s second

created a number of chances and, really, at 1-0 with the amount of opportunities we had, we should have found a way back into the game. We didn’t and got punished.

“Every time you put on the shirt it’s an opportunity for you to impress and make sure you make my decisions for the next game harder. I don’t think many did that.”

Wigan’s resilience and intensity ensured that they were worthy victors, and will now face further top-flight opposition, when West Ham United arrive in Lancashire for the fourth round, a week on Saturday.

Paul Cook’s team last conceded a league goal almost two months ago, and this outcome maintained an unbeaten sequence that stretches for 12 games.

“Our lads showed a great appetite to take the game to Bournemouth and create the chances to win the game,” Cook said. “We scored at the correct time. We got the second goal at the correct time and the third goal killed Bournemouth. It’s always a surprise. When you look at the quality Bournemouth have got, you would probably expect them to win the game.”

And as for West Ham? “They are a big club with massive support. I’m sure they’ll travel here in large numbers. For us, it’s a good diversion from the league, but nothing can detract from our main objective, which is trying to be promoted this season.”
