New mum Kenny to return at the worlds
Laura Kenny will return to competitive cycling just six months after giving birth, The Daily Telegraph understands.
Both the four-time Olympic champion and her husband, Jason Kenny, a six-time Olympic champion, will be named this morning in
the Great Britain team for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Holland, this month.
News of Kenny’s return so soon after giving birth to son Albie on Aug 23 is likely to raise eyebrows. It was felt more likely that the 25year-old, Britain’s most successful female Olympian, was gearing up for a return at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast in April. The GB head coach, Iain Dyer, had already hinted that Kenny was desperate to return.
“Within 10 seconds of me congratulating her on her impending child announcement, she was
immediately asking me about qualification points for worlds and for Commie Games and things like that,” he said last year.
Dyer clearly feels she is going well enough to warrant an outing in Holland, and Kenny will undoubtedly look to add to her seven world titles.
Jason Kenny, meanwhile, reversed his decision to retire from the sport last year. “I was happy to walk away and do other things and be normal,” he said. “I’d had enough of always living my life to a schedule and it being full on 24/7. But when I did refresh I started enjoying it again – out on the mountain bike and going to the gym. Before I knew it I was training and feeling like myself again.”
The 29-year-old made his competitive return at the Revolution Series last month. He then won gold in the team sprint at the recent national track championships.
