England expects How the process will evolve
How it used to work
James Whitaker would drive miles every summer watching players. Mick Newell and Angus Fraser also scouted, while Whitaker liaised with county coaches. Those three along with Trevor Bayliss would pick England squads. Joe Root, Test captain, and Andrew Strauss would sit in on selection but have no vote.
How it will work now
New head selector will appoint deputy and scouts in specialist areas – batting or bowling, red or white ball. National selector, deputy and Bayliss will form selection panel. Root remains a key voice but it is likely Strauss will take a back seat. Network of scouts will be responsible for player identification from under-19 to Test team.
Why the change?
Strauss has been looking at the process since 2015. Whitaker was the big casualty after Ashes defeat. Bayliss is under extra pressure if Test results do not improve.
