Hamlin defrosted and ready for Wigan debut
Australian forward Gabe Hamlin is ready to spring into action after battling his way through one of the harshest of English winters.
Hamlin, who arrived in Wigan from Sydney in early November, finally gets the chance to make his Super League debut for the Warriors, against Hull KR today.
The prop, who was signed from South Sydney’s Under20s on the recommendation of former Warriors coach Michael Maguire, played in a friendly against Leigh in January, shortly after celebrating his 21st birthday, and admits it was a shock.
“I really didn’t know much about the winter over here, how cold it gets,” said Hamlin, whose mother was born in Blackpool. “When I played against Leigh, that was the coldest game I’ve played.
“I’ve been patient and understanding but it’s made me more hungry, and hopefully I will make the most of this opportunity. It’s a big game for me.”
As at most clubs, Wigan coach Shaun Wane is shuffling his troops for the second Easter fixture.
Castleford have the luxury of being able to bring in prop Liam Watts for his debut against Warrington. Watts, who has joined his hometown club from Hull, is free to play after completing a three-match ban.
Hull have winger Bureta Faraimo available for their home game against Wakefield. The United States international has been given a one-match penalty notice following his dismissal for a high tackle in the Good Friday derby at Hull KR but will not serve the ban until next weekend.
Leaders St Helens go to Widnes, bottom club Catalans Dragons host Huddersfield and Leeds are at home to Salford.
