Mccarthy walks out with shot at ‘disgraceful’ fans

-

Mick Mccarthy was never likely to leave Ipswich Town with a whimper and last night the veteran manager dramatically announced his departure four games early following his side’s 1-0 home win over his former club Barnsley.

The 59-year-old had been due to leave at the end of the season but, after Jonas Knudsen’s 54th-minute goal secured the victory, Mccarthy marched into the press room and called time on his six years at the club.

Bemoaning the crowd’s reaction to a substitution, he said: “That was a disgraceful reaction but, listen, I won’t have to listen to it again because that’s my last game, I’m out of here.”

Mccarthy then banged his desk and marched out of the press room.

A statement on the club’s website later explained that his decision had followed discussions with Ipswich owner Marcus Evans.

Mccarthy was quoted as saying: “I spoke with Marcus at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now. I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest. I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that.”

Mccarthy’s relationship with the Ipswich crowd has long been strained and he has frequently criticised adverse supporter reaction to some of his decisions. But he leaves with Ipswich 12th in the table and above rivals Norwich on goal difference.

Mccarthy said he intended to continue in management. “I’ll also be looking forward to a new challenge elsewhere. I’ve still got a lot of football in me.”

Mccarthy has been linked with the vacancy at West Bromwich Albion and a possible return to Barnsley, who appear heading for relegation after last night’s defeat.

Ipswich assistant manager Terry Connor will also be leaving.

Evans said: “I have always enjoyed a good relationship with Mick and that continues and on behalf of the football club I want to wish him and Terry the very best of luck going forward.”
