Millwall storm into top six

-

Millwall took advantage of Middlesbrough’s 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United to move into a play-off spot for the first time this season after beating Bolton 2-0.

Tom Elliott and Ben Marshall scored the goals but manager Neil Harris insisted they are under no pressure to finish the job.

“It’s a special time for us,” said Harris after a first win at Bolton for 45 years. “Millwall fans are pinching themselves a bit. But league tables don’t lie after 42 games. We are in the top six because we deserve to be in the top six.”

Boro never recovered from a disastrous start against promotion rivals United, conceding an early goal and then having Grant Leadbitter sent off. Lee Evans scored his and United’s second before Daniel Ayala replied for Boro, who now trail Millwall by two points.

Bobby Reid fired in his 20th goal of the season to keep Bristol City in the mix after a 3-1 win over

Birmingham City while

Brentford, who won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, and Preston, who fought back to beat Leeds United 3-1, have yet to give up hope.

Sunderland’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a huge blow as they missed a penalty and then conceded an 89th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw with

Norwich. Chris Coleman’s side six points adrift of safety.
