Rivals mock Kane as he wins goal appeal

- By Matt Law

Liverpool players have mocked Harry Kane’s successful appeal to be awarded his 25th Premier League goal of the season.

The Premier League confirmed yesterday that Kane would be credited with Tottenham Hotspur’s second goal against Stoke City, which had initially been awarded to Christian Eriksen.

Kane was adamant Eriksen’s free-kick glanced into the net via his shoulder and, following an appeal, the Premier League ruled in his favour, moving him one goal closer to Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot.

Within minutes of the news, Salah posted a message on Twitter that read: “Wooooooow really?”

And Salah was supported by Liverpool team-mates. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet posted a meme of Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to sum up his shock, while Georginio Wijnaldum and Trent Alexander-arnold took to social media to express surprise.

Kane’s successful appeal was also questioned by his England teammate Jamie Vardy and former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker. Match of the Day presenter Lineker tweeted: “Well, well, Harry Kane has been awarded the goal after all by the Premier League’s goal accreditation appeals panel. That’s actually a thing.”

Vardy, who scored 24 goals in Leicester City’s title-winning season two years ago, reacted to the news with a tweet containing the raised-eyebrow emoji.

A Premier League statement said: “After taking the player’s testimony into account and reviewing the match footage, a three-person panel agreed that the final touch on the ball belonged to Kane.”

Marcus Edwards, 19, the Tottenham player compared to Lionel Messi by manager Mauricio Pochettino, faces a lecture about his timekeeping and attitude after his loan spell at Norwich was cut short.

The midfielder returned to Spurs this week having played only six minutes for the Championship club since joining on loan in January. Both clubs said he had returned for “personal reasons”.

The Daily Telegraph understands a number of issues contributed to Edwards’ disappointing spell at Norwich, including his poor timekeeping. The player’s management team were not available for comment last night.
