Ferguson out of intensive care

- By James Ducker

Sir Alex Ferguson is no longer in intensive care following surgery on a brain haemorrhage, Manchester United confirmed last night.

The former United manager, 76, had been receiving round-theclock care at Salford Royal Hospital after an emergency operation on Saturday.

But the club announced in a statement last night that Sir Alex would “continue his rehabilitation as an inpatient” at the hospital.

The statement read: “Sir Alex no longer needs intensive care and will continue rehabilitation as an inpatient. His family have been overwhelmed by the level of support and good wishes, but continue to request privacy as this will be vital during this next stage of recovery.”

Earlier in the day, Jose Mourinho, the United manager, had said the club were “very positive” Sir Alex would make a full recovery. The Scot is thought to be awake and talking and Mourinho – while reluctant to discuss the situation in detail – expressed confidence that he would return to good health.

“We are positive, we are very, very positive,” Mourinho said about Sir Alex. “We are confident.

“But it’s private. His family ask for privacy and that’s what I am going to respect.”

Asked if the news about Sir Alex could affect his players’ mood during their penultimate Premier League game away to West Ham United tonight, Mourinho said he expected it would inspire rather than inhibit his squad.

“No, I can only think that if there is any relation it is a positive relation,” he said.
