Johnson backs Derby to end play-off jinx

- By John Percy

Derby County’s reputation as playoff failures will only give them added motivation for their semifinal first leg tonight, says midfielder Bradley Johnson.

Derby have reached the Championship shoot-out three times in the past five years. Johnson was part of the team beaten by Hull City in the semi-final two seasons ago, and County lost in the final to Queens Park Rangers at Wembley in 2014.

They appeared on course to miss out on the play-offs last month, before a three-match unbeaten run secured sixth place.

Johnson, 31, says Derby are determined to silence their critics ahead of tonight’s first leg against Fulham at Pride Park.

“We’ve got the reputation because, ultimately, the club have been there before and failed. Everyone will always talk about Derby

Confident run: Bradley Johnson believes Derby are mentally stronger this time around falling away and not doing it but we’re mentally stronger than before and we’re going into the playoffs on a confident run.

“We’ve just got to go out there and prove them wrong. It’s a different season and I feel we’re a better team now.”

Gary Rowett is one of the most highly rated managers outside the Premier League but his side take on a Fulham team with one defeat in 24 games. Fulham finished 13 points ahead of Derby, missing out on automatic promotion on the final day after losing at Birmingham.

Rowett has said there is no pressure on Derby as Fulham are such favourites.

“There is usually massive expectation on us but this must be the first time we’re the underdogs. Hopefully that means we can play with a bit more composure and fluidity.”
