Man Marking England (3-5-2)

- By Matt Law

7 Jack Butland

Costa Rica did not show much ambition, but Butland did have to make one good save to keep out a shot from Venegas.

7 John Stones

The only player who started against Nigeria to start again at Elland Road, and he did not put a foot out of place.

6 Phil Jones

The Manchester United man is unlikely to have dislodged Kyle Walker with this display, even though he did nothing wrong.

6 Harry Maguire

Travelled to the Euros as a fan, but he will go to the World Cup with a very realistic chance of starting for England.

6 Danny Rose

This was a big chance to put himself ahead of Ashley Young for the left wing-back role, but he did not quite grasp it.

6 Jordan Henderson

Captained the team and passed the ball well, but there seems to be only one place for Henderson and Eric Dier to fight over.

7 Fabian Delph

England’s utility man started in his favoured role in midfield, and he showed that he can be more than a bit-part player.

7 Ruben Loftus-cheek

There was one moment when the midfielder left two Costa Rica players on the floor through sheer power. Promising display.

6 Trent Alexander-arnold

Handed his England debut and certainly did not look out of place. Provided good deliveries when he got forward.

8 Marcus Rashford

Manager has been pleased with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling up front, but Rashford pressed his case with a superb goal.

6 Jamie Vardy

Could not take one first-half chance and Costa Rica’s deep tactic did not suit his ability to run into space behind defenders.
