Surrey (219-7) trail Yorkshire (342) by 123 runs

Yorkshire hold the edge at the halfway stage of their Specsavers County Championship Division One match against leaders Surrey, having advanced their first innings from 299 for eight overnight to 337 all out before their score was boosted by the addition of five penalty runs.

By close on a day played out for large parts under overcast skies with a sea fret often enveloping the ground in mist, Surrey had reached 219 for seven from 72.1 overs. The sea fret eventually meant 14.5 overs were lost from 5.55pm.

The five penalty runs came as a result of two Level One offences committed by Surrey during the morning session. One of the incidents occurred as Surrey tried to prise out Yorkshire’s last two wickets, although the player involved has not yet been disclosed.

The other, involving dropped England Test opener and birthday boy Mark Stoneman, came in the early stages of their reply when the left-hander was caught behind off Ben Coad for nine in the third over. Stoneman swished his bat in frustration, although never looked like hitting the stumps, and made his displeasure at Paul Pollard’s decision to give him out pretty evident.

The day started with Yorkshire’s ninth-wicket pair of Steve Patterson (21) and Jack Brooks (27) completing a stand of 61 to take the score to 337 for eight before falling within three balls to Jade Dernbach.

After the departure of Stoneman early in Surrey’s reply, his opening partner, Rory Burns, advanced with fluency.

He reached 50 off 46 balls with 11 fours, but he lost Scott Borthwick caught behind off a top-edged pull at Tim Bresnan as the visitors reached lunch at 89 for two.

Yorkshire then claimed three wickets in the afternoon as Surrey slipped to 172 for five and reached tea with just two more runs added.

Coad and Bresnan claimed their second wickets, while captain Patterson picked up his first. Coad had Burns caught behind for 59 before Bresnan had Ryan Patel caught low down at first slip for 32, leaving Surrey at 140 for four after 42 overs.

Just before tea, South African overseas batsman Theunis de Bruyn edged captain Patterson behind for 38.

Play was stopped nine times after tea, totalling a delay of 25 minutes, due to the sea fret before the players eventually left the field.

During the evening session, Patterson trapped Will Jacks lbw for seven before Bresnan had Rikki Clarke caught and bowled as the score fell to 197 for seven.
