Barrios should have been sent off for deliberate headbutt on Henderson
England were taken to extra-time and penalties but it is impossible to ignore the incident involving Jordan Henderson late in the first half.
It was a deliberate headbutt from Wilmar Barrios, the Colombian midfield player, on the England midfielder – and that simply has to be a red card for violent conduct.
This was clearly not a yellowcard offence, so it is another big error by the video assistant referee in the advice he has given to the referee, Mark Geiger, of the United States.
It has obviously had a huge impact on the game and the VAR has let him down massively, as it should have gone to a review. Geiger is the most successful referee that the United States has produced. At the age of 44, he is officiating in his second World Cup finals.
He was supported by his colleagues running the line, with whom he is used to working, officiating in Major League Soccer games.
To put it more simply, Geiger is a very experienced official used to Wilmar Barrios puts his head into Jordan Henderson’s chest
operating with VAR, as it operates in every MLS game. But he got the Henderson decision badly wrong, and there were others too.
The mobbing of referees in Barrios jerks his head up and connects with Henderson’s chin
Russia is also unbelievable. We were told by the referees’ chief, Pierluigi Collina, before the tournament began that this would be stamped out, but so far it has Henderson reels back in pain and shock as Barrios looks away
been a massive issue, particularly in this game.
