How Britain’s No1 can upset Serb

- By Simon Briggs

1. Play the forehand from the ad court as much as possible

This is so much more dangerous than the traditional cross-court forehand from the deuce court. That way Edmund can hit the inside-out strike that sends Djokovic scurrying out wide to his backhand flank, then revert to the inside-in ball up the near sideline. As Djokovic dashes across to hit the defensive forehand, Edmund is likely to rack up points via clean winners or forced errors. Get into this position 100 times, win 60 per cent of the points, and it’s job done.

2. Serve strongly out wide

Edmund has superb numbers on his serve after the first two matches. He has been broken just once in six sets. Djokovic is arguably the best returner in the world, though, so Edmund will have to deal with far more balls today. The trick will be to push Djokovic out wide, leaving a hole that can be exploited on the next shot.

3. Get on top in the rallies and stay there

Grass is a horribly difficult surface on which to defend. So when Edmund serves, Djokovic will be looking to jam the ball back at his toes, as well as to avoid the ferocious Edmund forehand. Djokovic is winning an incredible 54 per cent of return games to date and he will try to take charge of his return points early on. Edmund’s priority must be to look after his serve.
