Danijel Subasic (Monaco)

Stood too far to his left for Trippier’s free-kick, but would have been helpless for Stones’s header.

Domagoj Vida (Besiktas)

Pulled all over by Sterling and jeered by Russian fans almost every time he touched the ball.

Sime Vrsaljko (Atletico Madrid)

Declared fit and proved just how crucial he was by setting up Perisic’s equaliser and clearing Stones’s header.

Dejan Lovren (Liverpool)

Lucky to escape a booking for shoving Kane, but was spared a repeat of his Wembley humiliation.

Ivan Strinic (Sampdoria)

Almost gifted England a second goal and penned in by Jesse Lingard before finally attacking dangerously.

Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan)

Wasted a decent chance in extra-time having been recalled after missing the Russia game.

Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona)

Missed a chance to kill the contest and not at his best, but helped keep the ball going in the right direction.

Ante Rebic (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Gave Young a torrid time down England’s left early on and drove a shot straight at Pickford.

Luka Modric (Real Madrid)

Gave away free-kick for the opener and smothered by England in the first half. But took control after that.

Ivan Perisic (Inter Milan)

Could easily have had a hat-trick. Got in front of Walker to level after he blocked an earlier shot and hit a post.

Mario Mandzukic (Juventus)

Perseverance paid off after being denied by Pickford in extra-time having been booked for showing his frustration.

Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Brilliant save to deny Mandzukic and no chance with either goal, but had some shockers with the boot.

Kyle Walker (Man City)

Beaten by Perisic to the equaliser, having made vital interceptions and headers and blocking shots where it hurts.

John Stones (Man City)

Lost Mandzukic for the winner after seeing a header cleared off the line in extra-time. Was excellent in the 90.

Harry Maguire (Leicester)

Close with another header and stood tall as Croatia began to dominate after half-time. A rock.

Kieran Trippier (Tottenham)

A dream start, with his first goal for England, but he was caught out for the equaliser and limped off.

Dele Alli (Tottenham)

Won the foul that led to Trippier’s goal and looked to have Modric well shackled until the second half.

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Lost his way after half-time with no one to play in over the top. Did not shirk his defensive duties.

Jesse Lingard (Man Utd)

Should have done better with one shot and saw another deflected over in another lively display,

Ashley Young (Man Utd)

One vital interception, but not at his best and perhaps fortunate not to be replaced before extra time.

Raheem Sterling (Man City)

Electric in the first half, but had little joy in the second and was sacrificed in pursuit of victory.

Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Missed a last-gasp header and forgot his shooting boots, with his blushes twice spared by offside flag.
