Sussex and Leicestershire secure two-day victories

- On fire: Jofra Archer finished with eight wickets in Sussex’s win over Glamorgan

Sussex stepped up their promotion campaign with a comprehensive defeat of Glamorgan by an innings and 154 runs inside two days to move to second in Division Two of the Specsavers County Championship.

It was their third straight win and they achieved it by taking 20 Glamorgan wickets in two sessions. The match was completed by its outstanding player, Jofra Archer, who uprooted Lukas Carey’s middle stump to give him eight wickets in the match.

Harry Dearden hit a quickfire 50 to help Leicestershire thrash Kent by 10 wickets. Having dismissed their title-chasing hosts for 104, Leicestershire batted sensibly to garner a match-defining firstinnings lead of 125. Batting second time around, Kent succumbed for 199 inside 50 overs, leaving the visitors to knock off 75 without loss in 15.4 overs for their fourth win.

At Lord’s, Jeetan Patel gave Warwickshire the upper hand against Middlesex. The offspinner, who ended the day with figures of four for 38, initiated a Middlesex middle-order collapse as four wickets went down for 27 runs to leave the home side just 143 ahead at the close.

Middlesex had earlier restricted the Bears to a first-innings lead of just 40 after bowling them out for 276, despite a career-best 118 from opener Will Rhodes.

Alex Wakely scored a century and Matt Critchley celebrated his best first-class figures (106) as Derbyshire and Northamptonshire continued to trade blows at Chesterfield.

Tom Latham hit an unbeaten 120 as Durham slipped to 105 for four in reply to Gloucestershire’s 362 all out. Durham were 219 for five at the close, but still trailed by 143 runs.

In Division One, Rory Burns made 153 and Rikki Clarke scored 111 as Surrey totalled 592 to claim a first-innings lead of 382 over second-placed Nottinghamshire.

Somerset’s Jamie Overton took four for 61, while Josh Davey contributed four for 68 as Worcestershire were dismissed for 257 in their first innings at New Road, a deficit of 80 runs.
