Dechambeau puts Ryder Cup selection beyond doubt

- By James Corrigan

Bryson Dechambeau has removed all doubt over his wild-card selection for this month’s Ryder Cup and all that is left is for him to swoop upon Paris as the $10million rookie.

The 24-year-old beat England’s Justin Rose to win his second event in as many weeks and take control of the dollar-fest that is the Fedex Cup. At the same time, he has made certain of being above even Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson when Jim Furyk names the first three of his four wild cards at 10pm BST.

In New Jersey at the Northern Trust Open, Dechambeau prevailed by four shots and at the Dell Technologies Championship in Boston last night he won by two.

But, if anything, this was even more impressive as he pulled clear of a congested, high-quality leaderboard with a final-round 67 for a 16-under total. Woods was left in his wake, despite pulling within three strokes at one stage, as were Rory Mcilroy, world No 1 Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, who has lifted two major titles this season, and Rose. “I can’t believe I’ve done this so early in my career,” Dechambeau said.

Rose’s performance will have cheered Thomas Bjorn, as he shot a 68 with four birdies in his last six holes to dispel any concerns about a back complaint. Yet both Mcilroy and Tyrrell Hatton had reason for disappointment as they fell into a tie for 12th with a 70 and 73.

However, Bjorn’s focus would have been on the display of Rafael Cabrera Bello, as he considers the four wild cards he will announce tomorrow. The Spaniard shared the lead at one stage but finished in a tie for seventh on 11 under after a 68.
