Southgate opts to see Mount
England manager Gareth Southgate gave last night’s Champions League action a miss to see 19-year-old midfielder Mason Mount play in Derby County’s 0-0 home draw against Blackburn Rovers.
Derby spurned several chances, with 19-year-old Mount going closest to scoring early in the second half when his free-kick hit the crossbar. His side dropped to eighth place as a result of the draw.
Meanwhile, Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland was watching another midfielder, 23-year-old Jack Grealish, help Aston Villa beat
Rotherham 2-0 to lift them six places into the final play-off spot after registering their first league win in as many matches. Tammy Abraham’s first goal since arriving on loan from Chelsea put Villa in front at half-time and Yannick Bolasie headed their second on his full debut for the club.
Brentford, who remain second in the table after being held 1-1 at
Ipswich. Neal Maupay’s header put Brentford 1-0 up at half-time, but Kayden Jackson headed Ipswich’s equaliser with 17 minutes left.
West Brom climbed up to third place by halting Bristol City’s fourgame winning run with a 4-2 victory at The Hawthorns.
Jay Rodriguez converted a penalty, after Dwight Gayle had been fouled by Adam Webster, and after Gayle had made it 2-0 notched his second to put West Brom 3-0 up at half-time.
Lloyd Kelly pulled one back for City, but Harvey Barnes fired West Brom’s fourth before Famara Diedhiou notched another consolation for the visitors.
Stoke City registered just their second league win of the season thanks to Joe Allen’s goal early in the second period in a 1-0 home win against Swansea City.
Wigan Athletic bounced back from Saturday’s defeat at Brentford by beating Hull City 2-1 at the DW Stadium.
Sam Morsy and Josh Windass’s header put the home side 2-0 up before Jarrod Bowen reduced the deficit before the break.
