Southgate opts to see Mount

England manager Gareth Southgate gave last night’s Champions League action a miss to see 19-year-old midfielder Mason Mount play in Derby County’s 0-0 home draw against Blackburn Rovers.

Derby spurned several chances, with 19-year-old Mount going closest to scoring early in the second half when his free-kick hit the crossbar. His side dropped to eighth place as a result of the draw.

Meanwhile, Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland was watching another midfielder, 23-year-old Jack Grealish, help Aston Villa beat

Rotherham 2-0 to lift them six places into the final play-off spot after registerin­g their first league win in as many matches. Tammy Abraham’s first goal since arriving on loan from Chelsea put Villa in front at half-time and Yannick Bolasie headed their second on his full debut for the club.

Brentford, who remain second in the table after being held 1-1 at

Ipswich. Neal Maupay’s header put Brentford 1-0 up at half-time, but Kayden Jackson headed Ipswich’s equaliser with 17 minutes left.

West Brom climbed up to third place by halting Bristol City’s fourgame winning run with a 4-2 victory at The Hawthorns.

Jay Rodriguez converted a penalty, after Dwight Gayle had been fouled by Adam Webster, and after Gayle had made it 2-0 notched his second to put West Brom 3-0 up at half-time.

Lloyd Kelly pulled one back for City, but Harvey Barnes fired West Brom’s fourth before Famara Diedhiou notched another consolatio­n for the visitors.

Stoke City registered just their second league win of the season thanks to Joe Allen’s goal early in the second period in a 1-0 home win against Swansea City.

Wigan Athletic bounced back from Saturday’s defeat at Brentford by beating Hull City 2-1 at the DW Stadium.

Sam Morsy and Josh Windass’s header put the home side 2-0 up before Jarrod Bowen reduced the deficit before the break.
