Manager wants it
“It’s massive for him,” said United defender Luke Shaw, who may miss England’s next internationals with a knock picked up on Saturday.
“As footballers, confidence is something you need when you step on to the pitch. We all know how much of a special player he is and this could have been a massive confidence boost.”
This could be a pivotal moment in Mourinho’s reign, coming back from two goals down against a Newcastle team who deserved at least a point but ended up defeated.
Mourinho, though, has to want it to be positive; a catalyst. United’s fixtures after the international break are Chelsea, Juventus (home and away), Everton, Bournemouth and Manchester City. These are the games Mourinho’s team will be judged in.
“I’m sure there were a lot of happy people watching [at halftime] and loving every single moment of it,” added Shaw. “But the team spirit is very strong.
“The half-time team talk was very strong, but it gave us a kick up the backside. The way we played in the second half was much quicker, much more direct, more like the United you saw in the old days.”
As for Newcastle, despite the agony of the defeat, this was a display that suggests they will not be in the bottom three for much longer.
“For me, the next three months are crucial,” said Rafael Benitez, the manager. “We are going to be playing against a lot of teams who are around us. We have to go and pick up the points from these games.
“In December last year, we were in the bottom five, but we still managed to finish 10th. Hopefully, we will continue to play at the level we showed against Manchester United.” Kylian Mbappe
At the age of just 19 Kylian Mbappe (right) has already achieved so much little he does surprises us. But then he goes and scores four goals in 13 second-half minutes as
Paris Stgermain thrashed Lyon 5-0. What a player. Ross Barkley Recalled to the England squad, he responded with an assist and goal in Chelsea’s victory over Southampton. Barkley went into this season well aware – at 24 – it was time to start delivering. Under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri, there is an opportunity for him to become the midfielder everyone hoped he would be. Roy Hodgson
First Palace could not win without Wilfried Zaha. Most worrying for Roy Hodgson (left), now they cannot win with him. A home goal would be a start. Palace have the organisation and plenty of good players, but the lack of a goalscorer is proving debilitating.
