Liverpool ease back Lallana

- By Chris Bascombe

Adam Lallana returns to the Liverpool squad today with manager Jurgen Klopp admitting the midfielder needs to “trust” his body again.

Lallana has endured a demoralising two seasons due to injury but his return is timely given the absence of Naby Keita against Huddersfield. The 30-year-old may not start but he is sure to feature at some point over the coming weeks.

“There is not a perfect plan for it. We have to make sure that he trusts his body,” said Klopp. “I love him as a player and as a person. His style is always full of desire and confidence. Having a setback wasn’t nice and now we need to get used to it.”

Klopp celebrates three years in charge at Anfield this weekend. It was in October 2015, when the enduring image of Klopp’s first game – away to Tottenham Hotspur – was an exhausted Lallana falling into his manager’s arms.

“On a good day, Adam can play five positions and would help the team,” said Klopp.

Although Liverpool are level on points with leaders Manchester City, there is some concern they are not yet playing with the same attacking panache as last season.

“It’s a normal period of adaptation,” said Klopp. “You need to get used to things – closing this gap, this space. You put the focus a bit more on something and immediately you lose a bit of the fluency in something else. But we have created enough chances.”
