he penalty awarded by Jon Moss for the challenge by Idrissa Gueye on Anthony Martial was another example of how we desperately need VAR in the Premier League.
From the angle Jon had I can totally understand why he pointed to the spot, and on first viewing it did look a penalty.
But as more replays became available it was obvious that Gueye had actually got a touch on the ball before making any contact with Martial, who then went on to fall far too theatrically.
I think VAR would have seen that touch and overturned the decision, although I know there are some who would say that touch might not quite be enough to say with certainty the referee has made a clear and obvious error.
But it really does baffle me that we can see at home that the decision was questionable, but the referee cannot do anything about it, and I think that needs to change. Until then we may make referees look foolish by ensuring they have less information to go on than television viewers.
I was also struck by Paul Pogba’s run-up, but while Jose Mourinho may not like it, I have to point out that the Frenchman is not breaking any laws. The reason is that he is maintaining his forward momentum while making those little steps towards the ball. If he were stood still it would be an illegal action, but as he was moving closer to the penalty spot he was well within the laws.
I also do not think any keeper would appreciate the practice being outlawed, as it gives them more chance to see the run-up and work out where the kick is going.
