FA shocked as ‘abusive remark’ case against Mourinho is thrown out
The Football Association was left shocked and considering an appeal last night after losing a landmark disciplinary case against Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
United’s decision to mount a robust defence, using linguistic analysis and citing precedents, including England midfielder Jordan Henderson swearing at an opposition manager, was vindicated as Mourinho was found not guilty of a charge of using abusive, insulting or improper language.
Mourinho was alleged to have shouted: “Fodas filhos de puta,” which translates as: “F--- off sons of b------,” into a BT Sport television camera moments after United’s 3-2 win against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Oct 6. It has been suggested Mourinho’s remarks were directed
at BT pundits Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand, ex-united players who have been among his biggest critics.
A three-person independent regulatory commission threw out the case, declaring the charge “not proven”. The governing body will review the reasons for the decision – expected to be published next week – and could appeal.
This is thought to be the first high-profile case the FA has lost since it failed to have a three-match ban on Eden Hazard increased after the forward appeared to kick a ballboy in a Chelsea match against Swansea in January 2013.
Mourinho is understood to be delighted at the outcome although furious the charge was brought.
United’s lawyers are understood to have cited the case of Henderson, who was caught swearing during England’s 0-0 Uefa Nations League draw against Croatia in Rijeka on Oct 14. TV microphones picked up Henderson allegedly shouting, “Are you the f------ ref?” at Zlatko Dalic after the Croatia coach claimed a handball. Henderson faced no punishment by Uefa.
