I will not run on to the pitch again, vows Klopp

- By Andy Kelly

Jurgen Klopp has promised that he will never sprint on to a pitch in celebration again, but says he does not regret the way he reacted to Divock Origi’s late winner in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

The Liverpool manager was yesterday fined £8,000 after accepting an FA misconduct charge for running on to the Anfield turf to jump into the arms of goalkeeper Alisson.

Klopp reacted in a similar way while manager of Mainz 14 years ago but says he will tone things down after tearing a hamstring while celebrating in Germany.

“I don’t regret it in a way that it should not have happened. I’m not sure football is all about a manager running on the pitch,” he said.

“That [pulling his hamstring] was with a jump at Stuttgart. That time I jumped in front of the opposite dugout but nobody – nobody – thought it was disrespectful. It’s just a cultural thing.

“It’s not for you to change and me to explain how the rules are. I did it. I broke a rule, I pay for it.”

Klopp, who takes his team to Burnley tonight, has also been warned as to his future conduct but believes any touchline ban would have been unfair.

“A match ban, for me, would have been too much. A fine is there to make you aware and make sure you don’t do it again. I will not do it again, as much as I can avoid it. There were 14 years between the first and the last one. It can’t happen any more – for the next 14 years.”
