A hat-trick in just 28 minutes

Wing’s magical afternoon

-

2 minutes The raw speed

May’s first try was a brilliant move from deep after Elliot Daly broke and clipped a brilliant kick through for the wing to outpace the defence and touch down

24 minutes The perfect step

May knew he had the beating of Damian Penaud and showed it midway through the half, swerving right then left before going round the outside to score

29 minutes The brilliant pick-up

May has plenty of skill to complement his speed as he showed with a fine one-handed pick-up to collect Chris Ashton’s kick to complete his hat-trick

‘Like a dog in the park’

Head coach Eddie Jones acclaimed the work-rate of wing Jonny May, whose first-half hat-trick of scores took him to seventh in England’s all-time try-scoring list.

While May’s finishing ability has never been in doubt, Jones says that his improvements in his kick-chase and fielding high balls have taken him into the upper echelon of wings.

“Some of the chasing today was outstanding,” Jones said. “Jonny May’s like when you got to the park and you see someone with a tennis ball and they throw it, the dog runs 100mph and chases it and brings it back. He does that pretty well.

“He’s really worked hard on his game. Jonny May is one of the hardest working guys in our team. His improvement is all due to his desire to be the best and be part of a team that wants to be the best.”
