New boy Law seals maiden Tour win with flying finish

- By James Corrigan GOLF CORRESPONDENT

David Law won his maiden European Tour title at only the fourth attempt in remarkable style yesterday.

Playing the 16th, Law, 27, from Aberdeen, was three behind local favourite Wade Ormsby at the ISPS Handa Vic Open in Australia. But with a birdie and a spectacular eagle on the 18th, Law overhauled the long-time leader, who doublebogeyed the 17th.

Law’s 66 and an 18-under-par total gave him a one-stroke win over Ormsby and another Australian, Brad Kennedy, and a winning cheque for more than £140,000.

Law actually had a part-time job in a warehouse lined up for the winter. Then he won the SSE Scottish Hydro Championship on the Challenge Tour and that helped earn his Tour card.

“It’s massive,” Law said. “For me, just being out here playing on the European Tour was enough.”

In the women’s event, France’s Celine Boutier carded a closing 72 for a two-shot victory over England’s Charlotte Thomas and Australians Sarah Kemp and Su Oh.
