Table-topping Salford defy doubters

- By Ian Laybourn

Salford coach Ian Watson is taking delight from watching his side defy the critics to lead the Betfred Super League after two rounds.

The Red Devils are one of four unbeaten teams after an emphatic 24-0 home win over London Broncos.

“If you listen to Sky, they don’t think we should be in the league,” Watson said. “They said us and London would be down at the bottom of the table but we’ll see who’s right at the end of it.

“We’re confident as a group, We don’t need to shout about it, we just need to go about our business.”

Full-back Niall Evalds followed up his hat-trick in the opening game with one of four tries as Salford ran away with the game in the second half after leading only 6-0 at the interval.

In the day’s other match, St Helens beat Wakefield 24-18 with a late try from Louie Mccarthy-scarsbrook.

Danny Brough had given Saints a torrid time with his kicking game but lost his temper in the first half and was sent to the sin-bin.

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester said: “If we can sort that part of his game out, I’ll be happy.”
