Wolves extend Coady and Doherty deals

- By John Percy

Wolverhampton Wanderers have secured a major boost after agreeing new deals with Conor Coady and Matt Doherty.

Coady, the captain, has signed a four-year contract to commit his future to Nuno Espirito Santo’s upwardly mobile team.

Telegraph Sport reported in January that Coady was in talks over a lucrative extension and Wolves concluded negotiations this week.

Coady is also in contention for an England call-up after he was watched by Steve Holland, Gareth Southgate’s assistant, in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday night.

The defender said: “To get it done and be sorted is fantastic. It’s great for me and my family to be part of this club for four more years. It’s an absolutely huge club and I love being a part of it.”

Doherty, the Republic of Ireland international, has also signed fresh terms after establishing himself as a key player under Nuno in the Premier League. His deal will also run to the summer of 2023.

He said: “I last signed about 18 months ago and it’s been a good ride since then. We’ve got promoted and we’re still in the midst of a really good season, so I’m happy to tie down my long-term future.

“I’ve been here nine years and they’ve not got rid of me, so I’ll be here for a while yet. I love it here and don’t want to go anywhere. I’m settled, so long may it continue.”

Wolves face Championship promotion contenders Bristol City in the FA Cup at Ashton Gate tomorrow. In the Championship fixture between the sides at the end of 2017, Nuno was sent to the stands after entering Bristol City’s technical area and there were red cards for Wolves defender Danny Batth and City goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

Wolves will check on the fitness of Diogo Jota for tomorrow. The Portuguese attacker has been nursing a dead leg.

John Ruddy has played in all cup games this season and is again set to replace Rui Patricio in goal.
