Wilder’s fury at players refusing to leave

- By James Ducker

Chris Wilder has told Sheffield United’s unwanted players to “go and get a club” after venting his anger at those he fears are happy to keep picking up their wages despite having no prospect of firstteam football.

The manager is growing increasingly frustrated with some members of his squad over their apparent reluctance to pursue moves after he has told them they do not figure in his plans.

Wilder refused to name names but Leon Clarke and Samir Carruthers, who were loaned to Wigan Athletic and Oxford United respectively last season, remain at Bramall Get on with it: Chris Wilder has questioned several players’ reasons for not moving on Lane, as do other transfer-listed players, including Jake Wright, Ben Heneghan and Ricky Holmes. Cambridge United are thought to be interested in Carruthers.

But should those who are surplus to requirements fail to leave the club, Wilder – whose side drew 1-1 at Bournemouth in their first game back in the Premier League on Saturday – suggested their reasons for staying should be open to question.

“It depends if they want to play football,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield when asked about potential departures after a summer in which he has spent more than £40million on new signings.

“The lads have got to decide what they want to do. I’m not saying they should walk away with nothing, but I’d rather be a footballer and get on with it.

“It’s up to them. I know, if I was a couple of them, that I’d have been at a new club already.

“I won’t name names but they should maybe think about their careers, rather than sticking something in their back pockets.

“It annoys me immensely, because I’ve looked after a couple of them – go and get a club. It should have happened a long time ago.”
