Dettori rattles up double at Deauville

-

Frankie Dettori’s red-hot season in Europe’s top races continued at Deauville yesterday when he won the Group One Darley Prix Jean Romanet on the John Gosdentrained Coronet.

Gosden sent the five-year-old to France in preference to a clash with stablemate Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks next Thursday and the decision paid a rich dividend.

Coronet always looked the likely winner with Dettori kicking clear over a furlong out as Coronet displayed a sharp turn of foot. Gosden told Sky Sports Racing: “She’s done it well. It’s a sharp trip for her – she has that weird way of running with her head on an angle, but it doesn’t stop her. She has been a great filly to train.”

Dettori had earlier won the Group Two Darley Prix de Pomone on Ed Vaughan’s Dame Malliot and finished a close second on Raffle Prize in the Prix Morny, commonly accepted as the best juvenile race run this season, which was won by the unbeaten Earthlight. Trained by Andre Fabre and owned by Godolphin, Earthlight had looked impressive in his three races to date – but connections were concerned about the testing ground.

The two battled hard throughout the final furlong but the colt was too strong for the filly, winning by almost half a length. Fabre said: “He can go further – he’ll be a Guineas horse for sure. The question is if he runs again this year – [but] I would say Newmarket [Guineas]. If he recovers from this he might go for the Dewhurst. He is top class.”

Marmelo, trained by Hughie Morrison, completed a fine day for British trainers when winning the Darley Prix Kergorlay.
