Charlton denied by Jutkiewicz’s late intervention

Relegation-threatened Charlton were denied a crucial victory at Birmingham by Lukas Jutkiewicz’s injury-time equaliser.

It appeared that Macauley Bonne’s 58th-minute goal would see the Londoners move four points above the relegation zone but Jutkiewicz struck in the third minute of added time to make it 1-1 and the visitors had to settle for a two-point cushion above the bottom three.

It was also a much-needed point for Birmingham, who are now five points clear of the relegation zone after ending a four-match losing run. Steve Spooner, Birmingham City caretaker manager, said: “The players showed resolve and resilience in an empty stadium and I think that is a testimony to the desire of the players to get a result.”

Stoke inched towards safety with a 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate that did little for Bristol City’s play-off prospects.

Danny Batth’s second-half header gave Stoke a deserved share of the spoils after Filip Benkovic, another central defender showing the finishing instincts of a striker, had given the hosts the lead just before the break.

A victory and three points would have almost secured Stoke’s Championship status and, though a draw leaves them with some work to do, manager Michael O’neill will be confident they can finish the job now they are five points above the bottom three.

Bristol City’s ambitions look more precarious after Dean Holden failed to collect three points for the first time since succeeding Lee Johnson in a caretaker capacity earlier this month.
