Leeds on the edge of the big time

Brentford’s 1-0 defeat of Preston North End means Leeds cannot host a promotion party at Elland Road this evening but victory over rock-bottom Barnsley will leave them on the very edge of a return to the top-flight. If Leeds win, they will move six points clear of third-placed Brentford, with two rounds of fixtures remaining. The Londoners have a superior goal difference but that will count for nothing if Leeds, assuming they have collected all three points tonight, take at least a point from those two final fixtures, at Derby County on Sunday and at home to Charlton Athletic on Wednesday. Brentford, who are just a point behind West Bromwich, who hold the second automatic promotion slot, finish off with Stoke and Charlton. Four points from their last three matches guarantee Leeds a triumphant march back to the Premier League after 16 years away.
