Big-race verdict
Marlborough’s horse-by-horse guide
Eagles By Day
Recently switched to David O’meara, and last-time-out winner of a Group Three for his new stable. Should stay two miles, holds place claims.
Euchen Glen
Should find this two-mile trip to his liking, but the form of his three runs this year leaves too much to find here.
Nayef Road
Ascot Gold Cup runner-up, but a long way behind the re-opposing Stradivarius. Winner of only start at Goodwood and proven at the distance; solid place claims.
Spanish Mission
Very consistent colt who has finished in the frame on seven of his nine starts. Has a bit to find with some of these, but can give a good account.
Stradivarius
Three-time Ascot Gold Cup winner going for an unprecedented fourth Goodwood Cup. Imperious in victory at Royal Ascot last month.
Who Dares Wins
Narrow winner of a thin renewal of the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot last month. This is much harder and he looks up against it, even with the first-time visor.
Santiago
Queen’s Vase and Irish Derby winner in receipt of a generous 15lb allowance from his elders. Far and away the biggest threat to Stradivarius.
Verdict
Stradivarius has followed up three successful trips to Royal Ascot with a win in the Goodwood Cup, and looks sure to do the same. In receipt of over a stone, expect Santiago to serve it up down Goodwood’s straight in what could prove to be a fantastic tussle. Nayef Road can uphold the Gold Cup form to a degree by faring best of the outsiders.
