Lam the man for England

England has more profession­al clubs than Wales, Scotland and Ireland combined, and yet the national team finished fifth in the Six Nations for the second time in four years, losing to all their neighbours in the same competitio­n for the first time in 45 years. Their attack has been poor, their defence worse and their discipline terrible. Apart from the French game, they have been boring, seeming to concentrat­e on the physical side of the game and very rarely taking risks when in possession.

I am afraid that it is time for Eddie Jones to go and be replaced by a man with a proven track record and whose teams play exciting, entertaini­ng, running and successful rugby. I am referring to Bristol’s Pat Lam, whose side play with a smile on their faces and quite often win!

Sorry, Eddie Jones, but your time as England head coach is now up and, in reality, has been for some time. Even with superior resources, your team have lost to the other three home nations in the same season for the first time in 45 years. Ever since the brilliant World Cup semi-final win over the All Blacks and the subsequent defeat in the final, England have steadily declined. A new coach would have time to work with the squad before the next World Cup and eradicate the totally ridiculous number of penalties the team have continued to give away.
