Wycombe rock Rotherham to keep alive slim hope of escape

-

Relegation-threatened Wycombe boosted their slender Sky Bet Championship survival hopes by inflicting a 3-0 defeat on fellow strugglers Rotherham.

Goals from Admiral Muskwe, Jason Mccarthy and David Wheeler earned Wycombe a second successive win to put them eight points from safety.

The result briefly relegated Sheffield Wednesday to bottom spot, but they overtook Wycombe with a stunning 5-0 defeat of Cardiff City in a later kick-off. Julian Borner, Callum Paterson and Adam Reach scored in the opening 23 minutes. Jordan Rhodes and Reach added the other goals after the break.

Coventry took a step towards safety by beating Bristol City 3-1. Leo Ostigard’s early strike and a penalty from Matt Godden put Coventry in control before Viktor Gyokeres ensured they would move seven points above the drop zone after Nahki Wells pulled one back.

At the other end of the table, the misery continued for Swansea, who lost 1-0 at home to Preston. Swansea have suffered four successive defeats without scoring after a late Matt Grimes own goal.

Daryl Dike’s brace boosted fifthplaced Barnsley’s surprise play-off push as they won 2-1 at Luton to move within a point of Swansea.

Dike squandered the chance to claim a hat-trick after having a penalty saved by Luton goalkeeper Sam Sluga before James Collins’s reply set up a nervy finish.

Reading remain sixth after beating Derby 3-1. Lucas Joao came off the bench to secure victory after Tom Lawrence’s stunning longrange finish reduced the deficit following strikes from Michael Olise and George Puscas.

Bournemouth kept up the pressure on their promotion rivals with a 2-0 success at Blackburn. Philip Billing and Arnaut Danjuma were on target either side of half-time, while Asmir Begovic saved a late spot kick from Adam Armstrong.

Millwall enhanced their slim play-off hopes as goals from Murray Wallace and Mason Bennett, either side of Jacob Brown’s equaliser, secured a 2-1 victory at Stoke.

Nottingham Forest beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1. Alex Mighten, Lewis Grabban and James Garner wrapped up the points for Chris Hughton’s hosts, before Lyndon Dykes replied in stoppage time.
