Shock Arc winner enters Horse of the Year picture

Torquator Tasso may have provided one of the bigger shocks in the 100 runnings of the Qatar Prix de l’arc de Triomphe, but his victory also means the German-trained fouryear-old has entered Cartier Horse of the Year and Older Horse calculations on the back of his historic success in Paris on Sunday.

A son of the late German Derby winner Adlerflug, Torquator Tasso (96) beat Tarnawa, Hurricane Lane (152) and Adayar (100) in that order and, certainly from a points angle, may have done the now retired St Mark’s Basilica a big favour by preventing the Godolphin pair leapfrogging him at the top of the table in the race to become Cartier Horse of the Year.

Torquator Tasso, who won the Group One Grosser Preis von Baden on his penultimate start, has also moved into third behind Palace Pier (144) and Mishriff (108) in the Older Horse category.

Another big mover following an action-packed weekend at Longchamp is Trueshan (68), who has swept past Subjectivist (60) in the Stayers category.

Having won the Goodwood Cup and now the Prix du Cadran, both since Subjectivist’s season-ending injury, Trueshan could really turn the screw on Mark Johnston’s impressive Ascot Gold Cup winner if he turns out again and wins the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday week.

A Case of You (58), who took the Prix de l’abbaye for Irish trainer Adrian Mcguinness, has moved into a prominent position in the Sprint category.

Only Ed Walker’s Starman (64), the July Cup winner, remains in front of the three-year-old colt.
