Rashford: Our 5-0 drubbing by Liverpool was an embarrassment

- By Ian Whittell

Marcus Rashford admitted last night that he had been left embarrassed by Manchester United’s 5-0 Premier League drubbing at home to Liverpool last Sunday.

A Mohamed Salah hat-trick and red card for Paul Pogba had United supporters heading for the exits well before full-time and the result has again placed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under severe pressure.

It has taken England striker Rashford three days to fully come to terms with the Old Trafford nightmare.

“I can’t lie, you haven’t heard from me on here because as a United fan I didn’t really know what to say after Sunday,” he said on Twitter last night.

“I was embarrassed. I am embarrassed. Our fans are everything and you didn’t deserve that. We’re working hard to try and fix this. We have to redeem ourselves.”

Redemption may be easier said than done for United, with tough matches away to Tottenham and Atalanta followed by a home derby with Manchester City.

A possible way forward for Solskjaer may have been suggested yesterday by Sir Alex Ferguson, who revealed his blueprint for a young, emerging manager to succeed in the game.

While Ferguson’s words were not directly aimed at Solskjaer, they did offer an insight into what the 79-year-old considers important attributes in managers.

“I have a great affection for people who are learning the game and want to be coaches and managers,” said Ferguson, speaking to a group of coaches studying for their Pro Licence qualifications. “I started at 32 years of age and, of course, in the time from there on you do learn.

“But I honestly would say that going into management at 32, there were a couple of things that I knew that were useful: one, I could make a decision; two, I played the game; and three, I had my coaching [qualifications]. Now, these things are really important.

“I think when you’re in charge of a football team, you’re not just in charge of 11 players on the pitch.”
