ECB set to host T20 World Cup in 2030 with Scotland and Ireland

- By Tim Wigmore

England are strongly placed to host the men’s T20 World Cup in 2030, with the England and Wales Cricket Board’s joint bid with Scotland and Ireland backed to succeed when the International Cricket Council decides next week on rights for events in the 2024-31 cycle.

England have hosted the T20 World Cup once before, the second edition in 2009. With the tournament to be played every two years from 2024, they are thought to be likely to host the tournament once in the next cycle, and have submitted a co-hosting bid with Scotland and Ireland for 2030.

As part of the bid, Ireland and Scotland would host a significant chunk of matches. When England hosted the ODI World Cup in 1999, two matches were played in Scotland and one in Ireland, but Scotland and Ireland would stand to be far more involved in the 2030 staging of T20 World Cup.

From 2024, the T20 World Cup will be expanded to 20 teams. The tournament structure will comprise 55 matches at 11 venues. Representatives from all UK governments have helped in preparing the bid, with matches also set to be played in Wales.

The United States and West Indies have made a joint bid to host the T20 World Cup. The tournament is expected to be hosted by the two countries in 2024 and would be the first time that a global cricket event had been staged in the US.

Co-hosting a tournament would be a significant step to USA Cricket’s ambitions of becoming a Full Member of the ICC by 2030.

After hosting the ODI World Cup in 2019, England will not host that event during the next cycle.
