3-4-3

Aaron Ramsdale

Spent most of the match as a spectator but kept his concentration and saved from Nicola Nanni when San Marino had their only attack.

Harry Maguire

Two goals in as many games and was more reserved with his celebrations this time after heading home a corner in the sixth minute.

Conor Coady

Played in the middle of the three-man defence and has a big presence. Was handed the captain’s armband when Kane went off.

Tyrone Mings

Made runs forward as he had nothing to do at the other end, and was rewarded with a goal. One of the easiest nights he will have.

Trent Alexander-arnold

Excellent crosses to set up ninth and 10th goals. Good work down the flank on return to the team. Looked likely to add goals himself.

Jude Bellingham

Looked to have opened his England account with a lovely strike that was ruled out. Looks at home against better opposition.

Kalvin Phillips

Not required to protect his defence as he normally does and was happy to let others take centre stage before he was taken off for a rest.

Bukayo Saka

Headed home the 10th but was not credited with the second. However, it was all his own making before Filippo Fabbri put through his own goal.

Phil Foden

Scissor-kick earned a penalty and his set-piece delivery was a threat during a lively first half performance. Given a breather at the break.

Harry Kane

Put away his penalties confidently and finished well as he added to his goal tally. Also dropped deeper when Tammy Abraham came on.

Emile Smith Rowe

The Arsenal youngster set up Kane’s second before getting on the scoresheet himself to mark an excellent first England start.

Substitutions: Chilwell (Maguire 45), Abraham (booked, Foden 45), Gallagher (Phillips 45), James (Kane 62), Stones (Smith Rowe 73).

Referee Rade Obrenovic (Slovenia)
