Alleyne and Dawson to assist white-ball coach
Mark Alleyne, the former England one-day international cricketer, and Richard Dawson, the former England Test player, will assist Matthew Mott during his first series as England white-ball coach in Holland this week.
England’s three-match one-day international series begins on Friday and they will use several English assistant coaches, with a view to announcing permanent assistants at some point during the summer. Alleyne, the most successful captain in Gloucestershire history, worked as a consultant during England’s Twenty20 tour of the Caribbean in January and is working as an assistant for Welsh Fire during the Hundred. Dawson, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s elite pathway coach, is also considered one of the frontrunners for a permanent job in the England white-ball set-up.
The pair will be joined in Holland by Neil Killeen, who is Durham’s bowling coach, and Carl Hopkinson, who is England’s lead fielding coach. Mott, the Australian who joined England after a highly successful stint as Australia women’s coach, will be given a chance to work with the coaches in Holland before England finalise their coaching team for the coming years.
England have used a fluid model with their assistant coaches in recent years, but will now appoint specialist coaches across the formats, largely in recognition of the relentless demands of the schedule.
The intention is to have specific specialists in the red and white-ball games – for instance, separate redball and white-ball batting coaches for the national teams.
England also intend to appoint separate red and white-ball national selectors.
