England v Norway

Group A Monday, July 11, live on BBC One Kick-off: 8pm, Amex Stadium, Brighton

The biggest test for England in their group comes in the second fixture against a Norway outfit buoyed by the return of former Ballon d’or winner Ada Hegerberg to their side. The powerful Lyon striker had stepped away from her national team for the past five years, in protest at a perceived lack of respect for women players in Norway, but matters were resolved amid positive talks in recent months. Strong, athletic and composed in front of goal – she scored a hat-trick on her return to national duty in a 5-1 victory against Kosovo in April – she will pose a huge threat, but the Norwegians are not just a one-woman team. Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen is also among the world’s best, while their starting XI is well equipped with top WSL stars including Chelsea winger Guro Reiten, whose crossing ability is exceptional.

Germany v Spain Group B Tuesday, July 12, live on BBC Two Kick-off: 8pm, Brentford Community Stadium

A potentially decisive second fixture for Germany and Spain in Group B as two potential champions go head to head just six days into the event. The two sides’ midfields are undoubtedly among the world’s best – with Germany’s Sara Dabritz, Lina Magull and Lena Oberdorf on one side and Spain’s Barcelona trio of Alexia Putellas, Aitana

Bonmati and Patricia Guijarro on the other – and promises to throw up a brilliant footballing spectacle for fans at the Brentford Community Stadium. Spain will seek to control possession but the Germans have a sharp-shooting striker in Wolfsburg’s Tabea Wassmuth who will not miss if presented with a chance. Nobody will want to have to settle for the runners-up spot in Group B because that would put them on a collision course with England in the quarterfinals, if the hosts win their own group.
