Eco-friendly range cookers

Necessity, as the saying goes, is the mother of invention. Ossie Goring built the first Everhot cooker 36 years ago as he was fed up with the energy consumption of his Aga and wanted to make use of a small water turbine at his mill in Coaley, Gloucestershire.

Goring did not intend the cooker to be a business venture but sold several to friends and other mill owners over the following decade, refining the design each time. His son, Guy, believed the cooker could be a commercial success and took the helm of the company in 1995.

Although standard Everhot models now run on electricity, the philosophy of creating ecofriendly range cookers remains at the heart of the business. The Gloucestershire factory where the cookers are hand-built (using British components wherever possible) is carbon-negative and the ranges can run on water, solar or wind energy.

Everhots are the most energyefficient heat-storage ranges on the market and can be fitted with an induction hob alongside a traditional hotplate. Better still, they are quick to install and and don’t require flues or pipework. Little wonder, then, that sales have been roaring ahead – up 40 per cent over the past two years.

Ossie Goring is still inventing things. And the first Evershot cooker he built remains in daily use. Some things are built to last.
