If anyone can make Birkenstocks edgy, it’s boundary-pushing American designer Rick Owens. His limitededition collection, out on Tuesday, marks the first time the footwear brand has collaborated with an independent designer. The partnership has yielded sandals that are unmistakably Birkenstocks (with riffs on the double-strap Arizona and single-strap Madrid), but in colours, fabrics and finishes that align with Owens’ darker vision.
