EXPERT TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME STAND OUT

- By Laura Ward, design director, At Home with Hostmaker

1. Go into detail

We see a lot of homes on Airbnb that have been thrown together with a ‘get the job done’ attitude – it’s obvious these days which owners have put in a little more time and thought. It doesn’t cost a lot to craft something special. Remember details in bathrooms, hallways and kitchens, such as pegs, coat racks, luggage stands or a chalk board for recipes and shopping lists. Include local details, too: a cookbook from a nearby restaurant, posters, or records by artists from the area.

2. The bolder, the better

To create headturning interiors that will encourage potential guests to stop in their tracks, you need to be confident in your design choices. Don’t be scared to make a statement: go for bold feature wallpapers or large murals, try painting half-and-half walls, or paint the ceiling, too. Always consider a variety of lighting choices as well – to complement your decorating scheme, and to help guests create ambience in the home, whatever the style.

3. It’s all about the picture

Styling for photos is key. Show off the home to its full potential – touches that make images pop are as vital as the scheme itself. Allow as much natural light as possible, and add flowers and plants for vibrancy (faux flowers are an excellent alternative). Drinks trolleys make a great picture, too. We also often add a chopping board with some bread, a bowl of fruit, or candles to set the scene in kitchens and dining rooms; it helps potential guests visualise lazy breakfasts and hearty dinners.
