My Saturday

Aled Jones on bacon baps and leisurely walkies with a faithful old friend

-

7.30am I always wake up early on a Saturday because my 10-year-old dog, a Bichon Frise called Cybi, is diabetic and I need to give him his injection. After that I’ll feed him and drink a double shot from my Nespresso machine before I shower. 9am I take Cybi for a walk, which takes longer than it should because he’s almost blind. Sometimes my wife, Claire, or my children, Emilia, 17, and Lucas, 14, will come with me. I live in Barnes, which is a lovely, leafy part of London, and we tend to take the same route so that we can shop for dinner on our way. We wind down Church Road and buy our vegetables from Two Peas in a Pod, followed by the butcher’s. I might stop at &Feast for a flat white. 10am When we reach Barnes pond we go to the farmers’ market: there’s a stall that sells bacon baps and so I take some home for breakfast – although I have to watch Cybi. He once stole some rashers while I was talking to the vendor! 11am When I get home, the family will eat breakfast. My daughter, who is an actor, has been away working in Canada and I’ve been on tour for my new album, so Saturdays like these are precious. 3pm We’re lucky with where we live because there’s an amazing cinema, Olympic Studios, which used to be a recording studio – I recorded some music there as a kid. We like to eat lunch at the café, before watching a film. 6pm IFI cook a roast or steak, I’ll start making it early. My wife is a better cook than me but we share the responsibility. I like making Gordon Ramsay’s delicious bois boudran sauce to go with steak, with shallots and Worcestershire sauce. 8pm We sit down as a family to have dinner and watch TV. We enjoy Strictly, and The X Factor .Iwason Strictly in the second series so I know the effort that goes into it. I’m usually in awe, because the men are so good now. 11pm The kids do their own thing after dinner. I might drink some red wine: I like strong Italian reds, such as a brunello, but I have a Classic FM show at 7am on Sunday so I can’t go to bed too late.
