My Saturday

7am We live in an old crumbly house in west London. Our ceilings keep falling down, so we are all in one room at the moment. I get up when the kids get up. But Charlie [Brooker, her husband, of

Black Mirror fame] will just sleep through – he’s nocturnal. On a Saturday I like a nice long hot bath. My friend made me Himalayan bath salts with essential oils, so I’ll use that. I’ll wear something with an elasticated waistband, jeggings or jogging bottoms – most of my stuff is from the usual suspects like H&M – I’m all about comfort. 9am My eldest [Covey, seven] likes scrambled eggs. The other one [Huxley, five] is a bit of a sugar addict, so I let him have a topper of Coco Pops on his cornflakes. I quite like porridge with banana. Charlie doesn’t wake up until later and has a neat double espresso. The school gives the children a million spellings, so we’ll try to make a start on those. 10am We’ve got ivy all over the garden and if we don’t control it, it’s going to overtake our

magnolia trees. My youngest loves to be out and get stuck in. They chop down bits and put it in the wheelbarrow. 1pm My kids like going to Wagamama – they love the mini chicken katsu curry and I’ll go for the pad thai with tofu. Charlie always has Firecracker chicken because he is a chili addict. 3pm On our route home we’ll go to the park. The kids have balance scooters and could spend years there. 4pm We’ve got a virtual-reality headset and there’s this game Walk the Plank where you feel you’re walking off the top of a building. It’s absolutely terrifying. I live in a house of tech addicts; I always say I’m analogue and everyone else is digital. 6pm Charlie will cook because there’s more time and he loves to do a roast or shepherd’s pie.

7pm We do like to watch a family film or Brainchild on Netflix – it explains different concepts and how things work. The kids go to bed at 8.30pm. Charlie and I always have some box sets on the go, but recently, as we’re Bafta committee members, we’ve been watching lots of nominated films – Parasite and Uncut Gems are good.11pm I fall asleep easily – when my head hits the pillow I’m out for the count.

Feel the fear:

I always instinctively think koala – they’re laid-back. They seem cuddly, warm – and not too highly strung.
