My Saturday

Jim Moir, aka Vic Reeves, on painting and dancing the weekend away

-

6am I’ve always been an early riser. Sometimes, I wake up at 4am and don’t go back to sleep… My mind keeps churning out ideas. I have a notebook beside my bed. Life is pretty much as it was before [lockdown], the only difference is that my son Louis, 22, is living here with us [Jim, his wife Nancy, and 14-year-old twins Elizabeth and Nell] in Kent, so we cook a lot of food. I do a big Saturday-morning full English breakfast, with black pudding, eggs and bacon – the lot. 8am Every day I’m in my studio – it’s wooden and purpose-built at the end of our garden. It’s filthy and has got paint everywhere. I do one painting per day, I’ve always done that. The twins come in and bring me cups of tea occasionally. 11am We live in the country, so we can get out and about. We’ve got some woods round our way, so last Saturday we picked wild garlic and made soup. 1pm We’ve got a really nice farm shop, Collin’s, just a walk across a field, so we might make a roast beef, pickle and horseradish sandwich. We’ve got a big garden with woodland, so we’re outside most of the time. The girls are off school and doing their lessons. Nell and her friend write letters to each other and Lizzie does cosplay. She turns up for dinner every day dressed as a completely new character. 2pm Louis is a director, so we’ve been making films and I’ve also been filming myself in my studio for Grayson’s Art Club [on Channel 4], using Louis’s 1980s video cameras. 6pm We’ll do a barbecue and all sit around the table outside. We recently made lamb kebabs and a very good borlotti bean salad with lots of herbs and chilli. 7pm We do a Zoom call with our local friends Steph and Rob, and a quiz. When you’ve got eight people on there, everyone starts talking at the same time, so it gets a bit messy. 8pm We’ve got a pavilion in our garden, so we have a mini disco in there. It starts with a bit of T Rex and might venture into some funk. And we’ve been trying out lemon-infused gins – Brewdog’s Lonewolf Cloudy Lemon Gin is good. 1am We end up having a good old danceathon. I’m usually the last one to bed as I’ll sweep up all the rubbish, then head up and drift off pretty quickly. The Big Flower Fight is on Netflix now
