Rejoice, for sticky facial SPFS are a thing of the past

OK, hands up who doesn’t enjoy smothering their just-cleansed and delicately made-up face with gooey SPF? Furthermore, who hates the white, chalky finish it leaves, which knocks out your natural glow and leaves you looking as if you’ve used a foundation three shades too light? Thought so. But, on the other hand, I’m guessing you don’t want the premature pigmentation, wrinkles or age spots that can be caused by skipping SPF, either. What I do know is that sun damage is the number one cause of ageing and we’ve been at increased risk since lockdown began, as not only have we been taking refuge in our gardens and parks, we’ve been having uncharacteristically joyous weather lately. And if you’re working from home, chances are you may also have been subjected to sun damage through a nearby window.

All of which may explain why sales of facial SPF are going up according to Alexia Inge, founder of online retailer Cult Beauty. But not your ordinary sunscreen: a new generation of clear gel SPFS. Inge explains that the interest is largely inspired by a Korean brand called Supergoop!, whose hero product, Unseen Sunscreen, has been a runaway success. ‘People love it because it’s so easy to apply and is great for all skin tones, as it doesn’t leave behind that pale, washed-out finish,’ she says.

Indeed, unlike some sun creams that clog pores and leave behind a greasy, spot-inducing film that messes with your foundation, this one acts like a primer that actually helps your make-up to last longer.

Since falling for the concept of a clear gel, I’ve discovered that there are a few doing the rounds this summer, including Estée Lauder’s Perfectionist Pro Multi-defense Aqua UV Gel SPF50. What I appreciate about this one is that it protects not only against UV rays but also against pollution such as ozone and micro-dust – and from dehydration, my skin’s Achilles heel. Actually, it feels similar to an ordinary facial serum and has blended seamlessly into my skincare routine rather than being an afterthought that often gets forgotten. Take a look at five clear winners below.
