My Saturday

Former F1 driver Jenson Button on boxing in the garden

-

6.30am I wasn’t [an early riser] before having a kid, but Hendrix [Jenson’s 11-monthold son] wakes up at 6.30am. We [Jenson and his fiancée, model Brittny Ward] take it in turns to get up with him and Saturday is normally my morning. I don’t eat too many carbohydrates unless I’m training, so it will be eggs for breakfast, and I love avocado. And always coffee. 9am I usually have a simulator race, Legends Trophy, with drivers from around the world. Fernando Alonso races in it, and Sebastian Vettel. I do it in my office, where there’s a wrap-around screen. 10am Brittny and I do boxing and core work on Saturdays. We have a guy who comes over, Jack, a professional boxer. Most of the time we’re in the garden – LA, where we live, can be hot, but in the mornings it is pretty cool. Then I watch The Secret

Life of Pets 2, Hendrix’s favourite film. I’ve seen it close to 50 times. 1pm I buy food from [recipe-box company] Hellofresh – it’s cooking for dummies, and that’s me in the kitchen. Lunch is chicken with vegetables and brown rice. 2pm We Facetime my mum, so she can see Hendrix. She’s in her 70s, living in Somerset, where I grew up. We spent Christmas together, but she hasn’t seen him in person since. He’s always got a smile on his face when he sees her.

3pm I do a bit of off-roading and go out into the desert [in Johnson Valley, two hours from LA] because you don’t see anyone there. I have a four-wheel drive Polaris buggy. 8pm The little dude goes down at 7.30pm, and we eat at eight. Half the time, it’s a takeaway. I’m a big fan of lasagne – you’ve got to enjoy yourself now and again. Then we collapse on the sofa. It [lockdown] has been a good time to be pregnant, as Brittny can relax a bit [she is expecting their second child]. We watch documentaries. The last one was Netflix’s Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez [about an NFL player who murdered a close friend]. 10pm Bed is at 10-ish. Before we had Hendrix, it would have been midnight. You suddenly age. I’m 40 and I felt young last year; now, not so much. But I’m proper happy, so that’s all that matters.
