My Saturday

Mel Giedroyc’s weekend spent singing Bowie medleys and howling in the park

-

The comedian and former Bake Off presenter, 52, on afternoon naps, jamming with her daughters and watching Airplane!

3.48am I wake up to have a worry. During the first lockdown, I’d lie there for an hour but

I’m down to 11 minutes. 7am

Our rescue dog Juno is my alarm clock. I shamble downstairs and switch over to Magic Radio – Juno listens to Classic FM during the night. I try to get the kids up at eight. My eldest daughter, Florence, 18, is doing an art foundation course, my youngest, Vita, 17, is in the lower sixth, and my husband Ben is a freelance creative. To let off steam, I sometimes go to a far-off park and have a little howl. 8.30am Imakea fry-up to keep our spirits up. I’ve become poncy and chop parsley into the mushrooms. 10am Ben and I walk Juno. I live in Dunlop wellies, Vita’s hoodie and black corduroy Topshop dungarees. We moved to the outer reaches of west London for Crossrail, the high-speed railway that’s three years late. 1pm

We try to have a healthy lunch. Vita is a dab hand at salad dressing, so we’ll have tinned sardines on toast and a herby salad with her signature honey-and-mustard dressing. 2.30pm I say I’m going upstairs to do chores and sneakily get into bed for 25 minutes. My darling, sadly departed dad was a world-class kipper and I can nap for Britain. 3pm Floss plays bass guitar and Vita plays the drums, and they hang out in the garden shed. Normally they wouldn’t be seen dead with their mum as lead singer, but we’ve been bellowing out Bowie hits on Saturday afternoons. When the first lockdown hit, I was just about to start filming my new comedy show, Unforgivable, which was delayed till October. But I had time to finish my first novel, out in April [The Best Things ].It’sa redemptive story about a well-off family who lose everything. 8pmwe want to support our local restaurants, so have a cheeky takeaway. My favourite is from India India in West Ealing – the salmon tandoori is exquisite. 9pm We’ve set up a family film club. Ben is a film buff and goes for a Luis Buñuel or Ingmar Bergman, while my go-to is something like Airplane! 11.30pm I’m rudely awoken by my husband attempting a fireman’s lift and bundled into bed.
