Indian weddings

Harriet O’Brien’s evocative account of her travels off the beaten track in India (“Exhilarating and marvellously mad”, September 24) reminded me why I love the country so much.

The wedding ceremony she described brought back recollections of two contrasting ceremonies. The first was a charming, simple affair in a temple in Hampi, Karnataka. As the only tourists we were invited to join this Hindu wedding and made very welcome.

Later, in Goa, 400 guests, from Mumbai, descended on our hotel for another wedding. They’d gone to extraordinary lengths with elaborate flower decorations and catering as the groom – the son of a diamond

Like Julia Mitchell, we too enjoyed the miracle of baby turtles struggling out of the sand to start life in the darkness of the Arabian night last February (“Spellbound in Oman”, Your travels, September 24), but we merchant – appeared on his white charger. TOM KINGHORN

Canada high

Canada is indeed a land of outstanding beauty with the most delightful people you could hope to meet (“Big country”, September 24).

From the Canadian man we met on the plane flying had an equally incredible experience in the remote mountains of Jebel Akhdar.

Having enjoyed a packed lunch with a group of greedy, pushy mountain goats by the roadside, we found ourselves in the remote green oasis village over – who invited us to his home for a barbecue and to meet his neighbours – to the ladies we met in an interesting coffee shop, the warmth we found there was amazing.

As for the scenery, Canada has some wonderful national parks and reconstructed historical buildings, all with very modest entrance fees. of Bilad Sayt. It was stretched out beneath us in silence when, as if to register our arrival, the sound of the call to prayer rang out, bouncing off the surrounding peaks. Heavenly. The night-time lantern walk around the graveyard in the town of Annapolis Royal was a highlight, as was having dinner at the theatre in Halifax.

Don’t go if you want wallto-wall shopping, casinos, or well-known chain coffee shops, but do go if you love nature and history, and making new friends. DOREEN GOODEY
